RIP Uncle Ed

Edwin A. Kirch III died on Monday, Sept. 17, at his home, Harrogate, in Lakewood. A memorial service will be Friday, Sept. 21, at Christ Church, 66 Highland Ave., Short Hills, at 1 p.m. Arrangements are by the Bradley Smith & Smith Funeral Home, Springfield. Born in Newark, Mr. Kirch was a longtime resident of Short Hills and Hopatcong, and moved to Lakewood 15 years ago. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College, Class of 1938, and of the Amos Tuck School of Business, Class of 1939. Following school, he was employed by Edwin A. Kirch and Co. in Newark and later in East Hanover. During World War II, he worked at Curtiss-Wright in Caldwell and returned to his familys business at the close of the war. He later became president of Kirch and Company, retiring in 1982. Active in the community, he served on the vestry of Christ Church, Short Hills, and was a past commodore of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club. He had an active family life and enjoyed friends, especially those who could play a good bridge game. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia W. Kirch. Surviving are his son, Edwin Buck Kirch of Basking Ridge, and his daughters, Hilary Dahms of Cape Haze, Fla., and Cynthia Damelio of Mendham. He was also the grandfather of seven and the great-grandfather of four. Also surviving are a brother, Roy H. Kirch, of Short Hills, and a sister, Doris Sieburg, of Navarre, Fla. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Christ Church, Box C, Short Hills, N.J. 07078, or to a charity of choice.
