If anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am not drinking any f%$#ing Merlot!

Thanks to this story that I found right here, I am going to defy Miles and try the Twin Fin Merlot this evening.
A merlot with tannins, flavor. A merlot that stamps its feet and demands attention. Earthy tannins, plum, berry and mushroom flavors, with some edginess to it. Incredible for $10 and a screw-cap.
The wine snobs (like Miles) deride Merlot. I think the general knock is that it "lacks flavor" or something. Well, an optimist would say that Merlot is smooth. Sometimes smooth is good. Smooth tequila is good, why not smooth wine?

I think some people needed to be reminded of what Jack said to Miles:
We're going to have some fun. Remember fun? We're going to have some of it. Okay?
Open a bottle of Merlot. Have some fun. Lighten up Francis.

I've decided against changing the blog format to ranchera music discussion. I don't speak Spanish well enough. We'll stick with the old format for the time being. Which was whatever popped into my head.

I like merlot.

I think some of the snobbery is that so much of it should be consumed almost immediately, rather than stowed away in wine cellars the particulars of which wine snobs like to fuss about.

Screw that. There are plenty of good $10 reds out there, and probably more good $10 merlots than just about anything else. It's about all I drink.

That said... mushroom? I don't really read wine reviews other than in-store and online blurbs, but I can't say I've ever seen a wine described as having a hint of mushroom. Did you taste the mushroom?
No on the mushrooms. I think I don't have a good sense of wine taste, because I very rarely taste the things that people write that they taste.

I was watching Fine Living channel (it's as close as I get) and on their wine show the host was talking about chemical tests that they've done on some wines where they found the same compounds as you'll find in, say, rasberries.

So, maybe they've got some science to back it up, I don't know.

Kroger has some new California red (Cab and Merlot) that's on sale for $3.
Just tried the Twin Fin Merlot (2003). Quite nice, very drinkable. Their Shiraz is worth trying, too. Don't let the screw cap put you off - these are nice, affordable wines.
