Oh, look out you rock 'n rollers

The following is a change in one of my policies as a precinct chair. I live outside the city of Houston, on purpose. When we bought our house, I wanted as little government as possible so I pushed for a place outside the city limits. We found a place that we liked and it was in a MUD, so it was a done deal.

So one of my first rules was avoid city politics. I felt kind of funny telling people how they should vote in a city election when I wasn't willing to live with the consequences of city elections.

I've decided to change that rule. Partially because I'm a stakeholder in the city now, we own a business inside the city. Partially because so much of what the city does affects me as a non-resident. Just about every place I go tacks on the extra 1% for the city. I also am the guy in our business who files the sales tax info every month, for free, so I get to gripe and get involved. Red-light cameras, SafeClear, banning smoking in restaurants, every petty, tyrannical decision by the city council could end up with me getting into it with the man.

I started to think about it when my friend, State Republican Executive Committee member Michael Franks, said to me, "It looks like this legislative session is going to have to be dedicated to protecting the citizens of the state of Texas from the Houston city government. That's just sad." It's unfortunate, I'm a supporter of local control. Unfortunately, the statists who control city of Houston politics are seeming to try and create a local tyranny. Since the city government derives it's authority from the state, there's really not much of a choice.

So, I'm getting involved in a city council race. More details will follow, when the filing is done.
